With
reference to Mr. Read's letter of the 24th
June last (17932/12) I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury to request you to inform Mr. Secretary Harcourt that from the quarterly Schedules and Vouchers furnished by the Treasury Chest Officer at Hong Kong it appears that a sum of £146.5.6 has been refunded by the Colonial Government in respect of payments made by him to that Government for rates during the preceding year.
I am to state, however, that this refund does not cover the whole of the payments made in respect of rates within the year and there is still outstanding an amount of £172.19.1, made up of various items as shown in the accom- panying statement, which has been paid during the year on property occupied for military purposes on behalf of His Majesty's Government, and has not yet been recovered.
My Lords are not aware of any reason why a dis- tinction should be drawn between the payments included in the list and those of which a refund has already been made, and They would be glad accordingly if directions could be given for a further repayment of the amount still out- standing viz. £172.19.1.
The Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
